Why Style Gets Easier When You Stop Starting Over
A few weeks ago, Rachael and I attended a wardrobe stylist conference in Dallas where we spent several days talking about client experience, relationships, systems, and how to better serve the women who trust us with such personal parts of their lives.
As often happens when I'm at events like this, I found myself listening for the lessons that have everything to do with life.
One conversation kept resurfacing in my mind on the drive home. It’s the idea that people don't actually want to start over. They want support.
And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much this applies to style.
Because if you've ever stood in your closet and thought, "Maybe I just need a whole new wardrobe," you're not alone.
I've heard some version of that sentence hundreds of times.
Women tell me they feel stuck.
They've lost their sense of style.
Nothing feels right anymore.
Everything feels outdated.
And somewhere along the way, they begin believing the answer is to start over.
A complete closet overhaul.
A shopping spree.
A fresh start.
But here's what I've noticed after more than a decade of working with women through career changes, body changes, divorce, remarriage, retirement, promotions, graduations, empty nests, and every other life transition you can imagine:
Very few women actually need to start over. Most simply need support for where they are now.
There's a big difference!
Starting over feels exciting for about five minutes. Then it becomes exhausting. You buy new pieces without a clear plan. You try trends that don't feel like you. You chase a version of yourself that no longer fits your life.
And before long, you're standing in front of another closet wondering why you're still frustrated.
What if the goal isn't reinvention?
What if the goal is refinement?
That thought has been on my mind a lot lately as my husband and I prepare for another major family milestone. This week we're attending college orientation with our youngest son. As parents, we're watching another season unfold right in front of us.
And while I wouldn't trade these moments for anything, they've reminded me how quickly life changes.
The routines that once felt normal eventually shift. The roles we play evolve. The demands on our time look different. And naturally, the way we show up in the world changes too.
The mistake many women make is assuming every life transition requires a completely new identity. I don't think that's true.
I think most of us are becoming more of who we've always been.
We're simply carrying a little more wisdom (and maybe even a few more greys) than we had before.
That's why some of the most successful style transformations I've ever witnessed weren't dramatic.
No massive shopping trips.
No trendy makeovers.
No throwing away half a closet.
Instead, they happened through small, thoughtful decisions.
A better understanding of fit.
Learning which colors brought energy to their face.
Building outfits around their actual lifestyle.
Letting go of pieces that belonged to a previous chapter.
Adding pieces that supported the chapter they were living now.
Little by little, getting dressed became easier. Not because they suddenly had the perfect wardrobe. But because they stopped trying to become someone else.
One of the things I love most about working with long-term clients is seeing this process unfold over time.
Some women have worked with us for years.
Not because they need constant shopping. But because life keeps happening.
A vacation comes up.
A promotion arrives.
A graduation invitation lands in the mailbox.
A speaking opportunity appears.
A body changes.
A season shifts.
And instead of starting over, they have support…
Sometimes support looks like creating fresh outfits from pieces they already own.
Sometimes it's finding one missing piece.
Sometimes it's answering a quick question before an event.
Sometimes it's simply reminding them that they're on the right track.
The older I get, the more I realize freedom looks different than I once thought.
I used to think freedom meant having more options. Now I think freedom means knowing what works.
Knowing what fits.
Knowing what serves your life.
Knowing what feels authentic.
Knowing you don't have to figure everything out alone.
Maybe that's why getting dressed becomes easier when you stop starting over. Because confidence isn't built from constantly reinventing yourself. It's built from understanding yourself.
And then choosing to support the woman you've already become.
If you've been feeling frustrated with your wardrobe lately, perhaps the answer isn't a complete reset. Perhaps it's simply time for a little support. And there is a world of difference between those two things.
With warmth,
